The iconic robotics company founded at MIT, now owned by Hyundai Motor Group. Boston Dynamics pioneered dynamic legged locomotion and continues to set the benchmark with the all-electric Atlas. Their Spot and Stretch robots are commercially deployed worldwide.
History
Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert at MIT, originally as a spin-off from the Leg Lab where Raibert pioneered dynamic legged locomotion. The company spent decades as a DARPA-funded research lab, creating BigDog, Atlas, and other robots that went viral for their uncanny animal-like movement. Ownership changed hands — Google (2013), SoftBank (2017), and finally Hyundai (2020, $1.1B acquisition). The Hyundai era brought commercial focus: Spot became the first commercially successful legged robot, and the all-electric Atlas represents the culmination of 30+ years of locomotion research.
