Safety certification is one of the most overlooked aspects of robot purchasing. Understanding what each standard covers — and doesn't cover — can save you from expensive compliance problems down the road.

The Major Standards

CSA Z434 — Industrial Robots Safety

The Canadian-specific standard for industrial robot safety, maintained by CSA Group. Key requirements:

Risk assessment methodology

Safeguarding requirements (physical barriers, safety-rated sensors)

Emergency stop functionality

Operator training requirements

Periodic inspection protocols

Applies to: Any robot deployed in a Canadian workplace

ISO 10218-1/2 — Robot Safety

The international standard adopted by CSA. Part 1 covers robot design; Part 2 covers robot integration.

Part 1: Manufacturer responsibility — robot must be safe by design

Part 2: Integrator responsibility — the complete system (robot + tooling + environment) must be safe

Key for buyers: If your robot manufacturer is ISO 10218 compliant but your integration isn't, you're not compliant.

ISO/TS 15066 — Collaborative Robots

Specific to robots that share workspace with humans (which includes most humanoids).

Defines allowable force/pressure limits for human contact

Specifies four collaborative operation methods

Provides biomechanical data for pain/injury thresholds

UL 1740 — Robots and Robotic Equipment

Underwriters Laboratories standard covering electrical safety, mechanical stability, and environmental requirements.

CE Marking (for imported robots)

European conformity marking. While not legally required in Canada, CE marking indicates compliance with EU safety directives and is generally recognized as meeting or exceeding Canadian requirements.

What to Look For When Buying

1. Ask for the Declaration of Conformity — Every reputable manufacturer should provide this document listing all standards met

2. Check the specific version — Standards are updated regularly; older versions may not cover current concerns

3. Verify third-party testing — Self-declaration is less trustworthy than independent laboratory testing

4. Consider your use case — A robot certified for industrial use may need additional assessment for healthcare deployment

Common Certification Gaps

Most humanoid robots currently on the market have gaps in their safety certifications:

Cold weather operation — Few robots are tested below 0°C

Outdoor use — IP ratings for weather exposure

Public-facing deployment — Standards designed for controlled environments

Long-term reliability — Most testing covers initial deployment, not 3-5 year operation
